Just found out that there is no “save and compact” from file menu in Flash CS5 when I try to compact it to optimize file size like Flash CS4…
According to this post from Lee Brimelow, Flash CS5 is now in XFL file format (an XML-based, open folder of files) in either zipped (fla) or folder. No matter how you save it, it will always be in XFL format so it is easier to update assets and version control.
I guess when you gain something, you lose something lol~

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackYes but it’s only gain — save and compact is the default since there are no more loose ends in the FLA.
But saving a file is taking way too long now!
That’s a big lose for people like me that save a lot.
This would be nice if Flash actually compacted the file every time it is saved, but this is not the case. I just deleted a bunch of audio from my Flash file and then saved it, yet the file size is 28MB (it was over 100MB). I copied all of the frames to a new file, saved it, and the new file turns out to be 28KB!!!!!!!!!!
Had the same problem as Joe but I found a work around:
- Save as cs4 (makes it smaller)
- Save again as cs5 (makes it even more smaller)
good luck…
Thanks Arno!
That seems to work. My 116MB file was 68MB when saved down to CS4. Then the file was 63MB when saved again as a CS5 file. Adobe should just make it compress without having to do this crap.
I imagine changing between CS4 and CS5 may screw some things up though.
Yes, saving from CS4 to CS5 might corrupt the file if the file was original done in CS4…, it happened to me once and you can’t save back to CS4 since you can’t open in both CS5 and CS4~ so better to keep a copy before converting.
Just ‘Save-As’ instead of ‘Save’… The existing filename and directory will be the default, so click ‘Save’ and then ‘Replace’ in the subsequent dialog boxes. It compacts it automatically.
this ruined my animation! I clicked on save and compact and all animation was ruined. 4 days of work went to the bin!
